World No Tobacco Day 2017 - A message from ISNCC President Stella Bialous

The International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care invites all nurses to celebrate World No Tobacco Day 2017.

Every year, on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), highlighting the health and additional risks associated with tobacco use, and advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is "Tobacco – a threat to development.” It highlights the need to address tobacco control in order to achieve sustainable development. Nurses can play a key role in both, as noted by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and ISNCC.

Oncology Nurses and Tobacco Control

It is ISNCC's position that oncology nurses play an important role in addressing health priorities around the world, including smoking cessation interventions and health education to prevent tobacco use. The 19 million nurses and midwives worldwide will be pivotal to achieving the reduction of tobacco use set by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Oncology nurses must offer patients evidence-based smoking cessation interventions since research validates that continuing tobacco use after a diagnosis of cancer is associated with a poorer prognosis and poorer treatment outcomes.

Additionally, oncology nurses play a key role in offering health education and counselling to prevent tobacco use, and most importantly, advocating for and supporting policies, such as tobacco free environments, that are proven to reduce incidence among young people, promote cessation among tobacco users and reduce overall tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.
