ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF NURSING
PRINCESS MARGARET HOSPITAL, DEPARTMENT OF NURSING

Hours: 37.5 HOURS PER WEEK
Status: PERMANENT FULL-TIME – positioned in Kuwait Cancer Control Centre

University Health Network and Princess Margaret Hospital (UHN/PMH) are partnering with the Kuwait Cancer Control Centre (KCCC) in transforming cancer care for the Kuwaiti population. An experienced Oncology Nurse will be appointed and permanently stationed in Kuwait for up to 5 years to assist in developing a new specialty program in Nursing in collaboration with the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, emphasizing the DeSouza Nurse Curriculum. This Nursing Lead will report up to the Operational Leader and will have an advanced Masters degree in Nursing.

The Associate Director of Nursing in collaboration with the Director of Nursing (DON), Kuwait Cancer Control Centre (KCCC) will help develop, implement and maintain professional oncology nursing practice and standards at the divisional level. This will be in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, Princess Margaret Hospital.  On an ongoing basis, the Associate Director of Nursing liaises and collaborates with the Assistant Directors of Nursing, KCCC and with stakeholders in education and quality groups in order to influence decision making to achieve nursing practice area goals and objectives. The Associate Director will play a key role in the development, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based interventions and knowledge translation and dissemination activities aligned with KCCC’s nursing strategic directions.  The Associate Director collaborates with Kuwaitee health care professionals at all levels to develop and implement organization-wide healthcare delivery models which advance and support KCCC’s mission of providing exemplary patient care and fostering excellence in healthcare delivery, research and teaching.  

The Associate Director of Nursing will be responsible for specific deliverable projects that include the following:

  • Ensures that nursing has mechanisms of accountability in place to monitor and promote standards for oncology nursing practice.
  • Ensures that an appropriate system of performance management and planning for nursing staff is developed and implemented that incorporates standards of practice, core competencies, clinical competencies and eventually advanced nursing competencies.  
  • Ensures a process for review of the nursing role, scope of practice, accountability and appropriateness for the hospital, of any new nursing related roles.   
  • Establishes an educational infrastructure that contributes to a seamless continuum of education from novice (orientation) to expert and helps develop and implement a framework for tracking professional development and continuing education of nursing staff. This will be in collaboration with the de Souza Institute for Oncology Nursing.
  • Establishes a patient centered care infrastructure that contributes to multidisciplinary patient centered care initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Completion of a Masters degree in Nursing or Science (with a specialty in Nursing) or equivalent, required.
  • Current certificate of competency (licensure) from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Supplemental education/training in the health care field, preferred.

Experience:

  • Ten or more years related nursing experience, including three to five years in a senior leadership role, required.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and maintaining nursing practice standards and quality control measures in a health care environment, required.
  • Demonstrated skills in managing financial, reporting and budgeting functions, required.
  • Extensive project management experience, required.
  • International experience preferred.

  • Broad knowledge of overall hospital structure, operating policies and decision making processes.

  • Disseminates knowledge through scholarly and professional venues including published papers in journals and reports; poster and oral presentations at conferences.

Opportunity: Cancer Center Nursing Director


Reporting directly to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and to the Hematology/Oncology and Radiation Oncology Section Chiefs, you will direct Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic cancer nurses in providing nursing care to patients within outpatient areas on the Lebanon Campus, and collaborate with all Norris Cotton Cancer Center (NCCC) regional sites to standardize nursing practice, education, training, and operations. You will plan, develop, implement, and evaluate nursing care standards as guided by patient outcomes and Dartmouth Hitchcock’s and NCCC’s mission, vision and goals. Other responsibilities include facilitating nurse participation in research and educational efforts; encouraging and supporting national oncology certification per the Oncology Nursing Society; ensuring that nursing services are coordinated and integrated across cancer center programs; serving as a problem-solving liaison; and facilitating respectful and productive multidisciplinary collaborations. Other areas of responsibility include workforce strategy development, budget planning, administrative leadership, and peer mentorship. The Director will be a resource to colleagues within local, regional, national, and international arenas. Requirements include a Master’s degree and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner licensure in the state of NH. Strong leadership skills and experience are essential. DNP and four years of hematology/oncology clinical experience preferred.
