Eastern Europe Nurses' Centre of Excellence for Tobacco Control

This project is a continuation of the EE COE I and our efforts are ongoing

There are major disparities in overall health, in particular in the incidence of cancer, between Eastern European and other European countries. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence of the link between smoking and cancer, it remains common in Central and Eastern Europe. In particular, the prevalence of smoking among Czech nurses is approximately twice as high as the prevalence among women in the general Czech population.

Tobacco control is a topic in which ISNCC has a strong history of international capacity-building initiatives, particularly in low resource countries including Eastern Europe.  Given the success of the previous tobacco control initiatives and the need for these programs in Eastern Europe and particularly Czech Republic,  the Eastern Europe Nurses’ Centre of Excellence for Tobacco Control project was hosted in Prague, Czech Republic in 2013.

The major goals of this project are:

  1. To address the epidemic of tobacco use and the resulting cancers in the Czech Republic,
Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia through enhancing the provision of tobacco
dependence treatment and tobacco control education
  2. To act as the regional reference for engaging nurses in the fight against tobacco and to
    promote cancer prevention
  3. To act as the regional reference for building capacity among nurses to work on smoking
cessation and thereby cancer prevention initiatives

The creation of the center was made possible through a grant from the BMS Foundation to the ISNCC.
